Chung Ju-yung, Founder of the Hyundai Group was inspired by
Edgar Albert Guest’s poem that he popularized it in Asia and he quoted it
so often in his speeches that it became known as “Hyundai’s motto”

Miyamoto Musashi was a man who struggled to become a better person
through the sword. Guided by Zen master Takuan who gave him enlightenment,
he spent three years in the dark, reading books and struggling, risking everything
to devote himself to training and embarking on a long journey of asceticism
to find the path he should take. “The sword is not a theory. Life is not a theory.
It is action, it is doing [practice].”
미야모토 무사시는 검을 통해서 더 나은 사람이 되기 위해 몸부림 친
사나이였다. 그에게 깨달음을 안겨준 Zen master 다쿠안의 가이드(guide)로
그는 삼 년 동안 어둠 속에서 책을 읽고 몸부림치며 자신이 가야할 길을
찾기위해 모든걸 걸고 수행에 전념하며 기나긴 고행길을 나선다.
“검은 이론이 아니다. 인생도 이론이 아니다. 행동하는 것이요,
실천하는 것이다.”
Musashi, who had set out on a journey in earnest to train as a warrior,
confronted the Yoshioka clan in Kyoto. The Yoshioka clan was a prestigious
family of swordsmen who had taught swordsmanship to the shogun for generations.
This Yoshioka Military School was run by the Yoshioka family, who had served
as swordsmanship instructors for the Ashikaga Shogun family for generations,
and was the only military authority in Kyoto at the time.
본격적으로 길을 떠나 무사 수련에 들어간 무사시는 교토에서 요시오카 가문과
맞붙는다. 요시오카 가문은 몇 대에 걸처 쇼군에게 검술을 가르쳐 온 칼의
달인들이 모인 명문가이다. 이 요시오카 병법소는 대대로 아시카가 쇼군
가문의 검술사범을 맡고 있었던 요시오카 일가가 운영하는 곳으로 당대 교토에
있어 유일무이 병법의 권위였다.
Miyamoto Musashi, who challenged Yoshioka, stopped in front of a Buddhist
statue before going to the duel site. However, Musashi touched the sword with
his hand, changed his mind, and left. According to the Book of Five Rings written
by Musashi himself, he thought this in front of the Buddhist statue.
“I respect the existence of God. However, I can no longer rely solely on God.
Believing in God is believing in myself. I will stake my life on the sword,
consider it my soul, and challenge myself to see how far I can elevate myself
as a human being who has always trained!”
요시오카에 도전한 미야모토 무사시는 결투 장소로 가기전에 불상앞에
멈춰섭니다. 그러나 무사시는 손으로 검을 만져보며, 마음을 바꾸고 자리를
떠납니다. 무사시가 직접 저술한 <오륜서>에 의하면 그때 그는 불상앞에서
이런 생각을 했다고 합니다. “신이 있다는 것을 존중한다. 그러나 이제 나는
더 이상 하나님만을 의지해서는 안된다. 신을 믿는 것은 바로 나를 믿는
것이다. 검에 인생을 걸고 이것을 혼으로 여기고 늘 수련한 인간으로서
나를 어디까지 고양시킬수 있는지 도전해보자!”
In the end, it is said that Musashi won over 60 real sword/wooden sword duels.
He won over 60 matches where he would have died or become a cripple if he lost
even once, and he is called the strongest man and strategist in history.
The story of his sincerity toward the sword and his efforts to study the lonely path
has become the story of all those who strive to achieve their dreams...
결국 무사시는 진검/목검 승부에서 60여번이나 이겼다고 한다. 한번이라도
지면 죽거나 폐인이 되는 승부를 60번이 넘게 이겼으며, 역사상 가장 강한

One day, a young monk named Do-shin came to see Master Seung-chan
and said, “I beg you Master, to show your compassion and lead me
to the Dharma-gate of liberation.”
Master Seung-chan asked, “Who is it who has bound you?”
The monk answered, “Nobody has bound me.”
The Master then said, “In that case, why should you continue
to seek liberation?” Then Do-shin was truly enlightened.

was a man named 'Ernest Shackleton', who at first glance seemed
like a 'failed explorer'.
